To become a teacher assistant in Arizona public schools you must complete an application with the local school district. Every district will have different requirements for the application process so check the local school district for any additional qualifications. For example, you may need to obtain a fingerprint clearance card; if your district requires a card, start the process as soon as possible, as it takes some time. Additionally, Arizona school district employed teacher’s aides can participate in a district “Grow Your Own” paraprofessional program that leads to completing a teacher preparation program and obtaining a teaching certificate.
Requirements and Preparation
Highschool diploma/GED equivalent
Pass a Background Check
Obtain a valid fingerprint clearance (if necessary)
Valid or ability to obtain CPR and first aid certification (if necessary; in some cases this may be required within 30 days of employment)
Requirements to work in Title I Schools
NCLB’s Highly Qualified Standard applies as a requirement for all teacher assistants seeking employment in Title I schools. An instructional paraprofessional in a Title I school-wide program or an instruction paraprofessional in a Title I targeted assistance program who is paid with Title I funds is required to meet the following requirements in the state of Arizona:
An associate’s degree or 60 semester hours of coursework documented on an official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education; or The passage of a formal state assessment.
Acceptable assessments approved by the Arizona Department of Education are listed below:
- Para Pro assessment- you must achieve the qualifying score which 459; test fee is a non-refundable $45 and additional fees may apply
- ACT Workkeys assessment-you must hold a passing score of 4 on applied mathematics, locating information, and reading for information
