Teacher Assistant Requirements in Mississippi

Requirements to work in Title I School
In the state of Mississippi, the school board districts may set their own qualifications above the federal or state regulation. However, the NCLB’s Highly Qualified Standard applies as a basic guideline for all teacher assistants seeking employment in Title I schools. All instructional paraprofessional in a Title I school-wide program or Title I targeted assistance program who is paid with Title I funds is required to meet at least ONE of following requirements:

  • Complete at least 2 years (48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education; or
  • Obtain an associates degree from an accredited institution of higher education; or
  • Pass a formal and state approved assessment. The state of Mississippi uses ACT WorkKeys assessment scores to determine qualification. The passing scores are as follows:
a. Reading for Information Passing score = 4
b. Applied Mathematics Passing score = 4
c. Writing or Business Writing Passing score = 3
