In New Jersey, the county boards of education set the requirements for hiring teacher assistants. They use the NCLB’s Highly Qualified Standard as its basic guideline.
Requirements to work in Title I School
NCLB’s Highly Qualified Standard applies as a requirement for all teacher assistants seeking employment in Title I schools. An instructional paraprofessional in a Title I school-wide program or Title I targeted assistance program who is paid with Title I funds is required to meet at least one of following requirements in the state of New Jersey:
Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education
An associate’s degree or 48 semester hours of coursework documented on an official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education; or pass a formal state assessment.
Acceptable assessments approved by the New Jersey Department of Education:
Para Pro assessment- you must achieve the qualifying score which 456; test fee is a non-refundable $45 and additional fees may apply
ACT Workkeys assessment-you must hold a passing score of 4 on applied mathematics, locating information, and reading for information

Tuberculosis Test (within no more than 6 months after employment)
